Below you will find some of the key concepts I will be teaching each month. Next to the concept I have listed vocabulary words we will be using in music class. I use a spiral curriculum that sequentially introduces new concepts that are developmentally appropriate. A sequential, spiral curriculum provides a music program that builds from one year to the next - always offering challenges for different levels, abilities and grades. Therefore, each grade will be doing the same concepts from year to year but each year will build on the year before to increasingly become more challenging. Although each month has a focus I continue to include the concepts all year long. For example, our focus in August is singing but we will continue to sing throughout the year.
Singing: Posture, Breathing, Matching pitch
This month we are reviewing concepts from last year and practicing keeping steady beats together as a group. All grade levels will continue to develop singing technique including pitch matching and tone production. The upper grades will begin singing in playing in harmony!!! All grades will begin studying the string family of the orchestra and have an opportunity to hear the violin played in their classroom. We will begin to use discuss and use the pitched and un-pitched percussion instruments in the music classroom.
